Harry Potter Novel Connections (Part 2)

Many story connections exist between the Harry Potter books that sit at opposite ends of each other; i.e. books one and seven; books two and six; and books three and five. Finally, book four shares many connections with each pair of books. This post looks at books two and six, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, respectively.
 

Book Two

Book Six

Voldemort only appears as a memory of his sixteen year old self as Tom Riddle via his diary.

Voldemort only appears in memory flashbacks via Albus Dumbledore’s Pensieve.

 

 

The Hogwarts Vanishing Cabinet is destroyed by Peeves as a diversion for Harry to avoid being punished by Argus Filch.

Draco Malfoy attempts to repair the same Vanishing Cabinet to allow a group of Death Eaters to enter Hogwarts from the Borgin and Burkes Vanishing Cabinet, in order to accomplish his plot to assassinate Albus Dumbledore.

 

 

Harry suspects that Draco Malfoy is Slytherin’s heir. Ron and Hermione share these suspicions. These suspicions are proven wrong.

Harry suspects that Draco Malfoy is a Death Eater and is up to something. Ron and Hermione don’t believe Harry. These suspicions are proven correct.

 

 

Knockturn Alley and the shop Borgin and Burkes appear for the first time in the series.

Knockturn Alley and the shop Borgin and Burkes both re-appear. We learn via memory flashbacks that Voldemort was employed at Borgin and Burkes for a time.

 

 

The Hand of Glory appears in Borgin and Burkes.

Draco Malfoy is seen using the Hand of Glory in his plot to assassinate Albus Dumbledore.

 

 

Harry notices an Opal necklace while in Borgin and Burkes.

The same Opal necklace is used by Draco Malfoy in his attempt to assassinate Albus Dumbledore. Katie Bell is the victim instead.

 

 

Harry finds Tom Riddle’s diary, who turns out to be Voldemort’s younger self as a sixteen year old.

Harry’s copy of Advanced Potions Making belonged to the Half-Blood Prince, who turned out to be Severus Snape while he was at Hogwarts as a student.

 

 

Tom Riddle’s diary is later revealed to be a Horcrux in book six.

The concept of Horcruxes are first introduced.

 

 

The diary is destroyed by Harry, the first of Voldemort’s Horcruxes.

Albus Dumbledore destroys Marvolo Gaunt's Ring, the second of Voldermort’s Horcruxes.

 

 

The founding of Hogwarts and the legend of the Chamber of Secrets is described by Professor Binns. The Sorting Hat originally belonged to Godric Gryffindor, who also owned a Goblin-made sword.

The school founders all owned at least one magical artefact, which were turned into Horcruxes by Voldemort expect for Gryffindor’s.

 

 

Arogag the Spider is introduced.

Arogag dies.

 

 

 

Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor Lockhart is described as physically attractive, but is incompetent at the subject.

Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor Snape is described as physically unattractive, but is very competent at the subject.

 

 

Moaning Myrtle is introduced.

Moaning Myrtle makes her last appearance.

 

 

Harry and Ron use Polyjuice Potion to turn into Crabbe and Goyle in order to interrogate Mafloy about the Heir of Slytherin.

Crabbe and Goyle use Polyjuice Potion to turn into two eleven year old first year girls as part of Malfoy’s plan to assassinate Albus Dumbledore.

 

 

The school believes Harry to be the Heir of Slytherin; therefore hostility towards Harry is expressed by other students for this.

Following the concluding events of the previous story and the reveal of the central prophecy to the series, Harry is beloved by the school.

 

 

Harry discovers that he speaks Parseltongue.

Harry understands the conversation between Morphin, Marvolo and one of the Ministry´s employees because he knows that language.

 

 

Ginny Weasley, Ron’s little sister, has a crush on Harry.

Harry falls in love with her.
